The social networking app Social Beat by iSkoot is now available natively on the enV Touch. It has a stream with all of your facebook, twitter, gmail, and news feeds, and has a google talk client. It's not perfect, but it's a free way to check your friends statuses without wrestling the browser.

Definitely worth a try — I think it's really the one app that most people were hoping for when they bought the phone.

Some members have used a hack from the guides and downloads section to get the enV version of Social Beat. This one is a lot nicer, faster, but the much larger text does mean you basically see one update at a time instead of a few.

Also, the app only works in landscape mode so far.

Great find, thanks. Definitely switching to a Droid in a few months, but this will make the wait a little less painful.

Yeah that's a pretty rough app... hopefully we'll see improvements soon.

I don't know if I'd call it "rough" … it's actually good compared to anything else I've seen on non-smartphones on VZW, or compared to the way the "hacked" version of the same app was.

After using it for a week, I only see a few problems: the inability to click many web links, the difficulty of scrolling when the phone is closed, and the fact that it's only in landscape mode.

On Social Beat's facebook "fan page," they have commented that a version that uses the accelerometer is coming out, so at least portrait will be enabled. Hopefully they'll address the other 2 in upcoming versions.

I'm not going to use it until it's functional in portrait mode. I simply like Myspace's mobile website better than this app, as well as Facebooks. Hopefully the next version is better.

eh.  I'd give it a 2 out of 5 in usefulness.  It has one too many interface quirks...and the GMAIL usability is or appears to be read-only.

New version is available today. You have to delete your old version and re-download it, but the new version has portrait mode. They did away with landscape on the touch screen, but it was pretty useless anyway. In portrait, the top icons are smaller so you can actually scroll through posts.

Quad… the gmail isn't read only, I use it to send email all the time. Just click compose new in the bottom left corner of the gmail page.

Since i mainly just use this for statuses and gmail, my only real problem is that you can't open the phone, type something, then close it back since the app will close.

I look forward to trying it out new version style, thanks for the heads up.

It's definitely still not perfect. It's too slow, and since the new browser is amazing, some of its appeal is gone.

Even so, I like to support any company who comes up with free apps for VZW, and it is a neat and useful idea.

I love Social Beat!  I was hoping for a good google talk and twitter app that was free, and this is it.  now, i'm just testing how much data is pulled with this program because I only have the 25MB data plan.

gmail is not a big deal for me because I do gmail through the mobile email app.

i know to avoid the rss feeds because that has to be a data hog.
facebook on a 25MB package is to be avoided too.

does anyone know if google talk through social beat uses text messages or is it purely data?

I have now gotten the Social Beat app also and absolutely love it.  The only thing's I don't like is how glitchy the touch screen is and how it closes the app when switching from internal to external.  But, this app should've been out when the phone was released.  I will have to say though it's nice to actually find a good free app on the verizon store.  That was more of a shocker than anything to me. haha.

On a side note...  I've seen where a lot of people use mobile email and I am just wondering how?  I hate that program.  Either I'm an idiot and haven't figured this out but how in the world go you follow a link in Mobile email?  I cannot figure out how to get it to work so I just had all my emails going to the vzwpix.com account where I can actually open links into the browser.

has anyone had social beat hang at the login in process?  the program would work fine for a few days.  but then i try to log into one of the services (twitter, facebook, google chate, etc) and the logging in symbol will spin indefinitely.  it won't let me log in.

the only thing i can do is delete the app and redownload it which fixes the problem.  but after a few days, I hav the same problems.  but i only have the 25MB plan and downloading the app counts against it.

if this was fixed for me, it'd be the ideal free app.

I've had that happen to me a few times… I usually just exit the app and wait a while, then re-open it and it's automatically logged in as if it had never signed out. It's a pain, but when it does that I just use the browser for my facebook/twitter fix (which is much less painful with the new browser)
