Free is free, the application is. As for data usage, that is based on your plan. Social Beat doesn't appear to be a data hog, but paired with other usage if you're in the 25MB plan you gotta keep close track of it.

here's a lesson i got recently.

i've been having that logging in difficulty with Social Beat (the only cure I can see is uninstalling it and redownloading the app).

well, the other night, it was really late and i was tired. but i went to try to log into Social Beat. it kept spinning and trying to log in. well, i fell asleep... woke up the next day, my cell phone was dead. i was like, huh... i plug it in to charge it and realized that it must have been running Social Beat, trying to log in... I go to my data usage and I spent 28 MB just trying to log in and never go through. that was on top of the 16MB I had spent on other things.

how much is MB overage on this $10 data plan?

If I am not mistaken it's $1.99 per MB over your plan. But to be sure I would call Verizon.
