Has anyone here used VZ Navigator that has also used a Garmin or some other GPS unit that can give a comparison of the two. I'm just wondering how well VZ Nav works and if it's worth the monthly fee they charge for it.

I have used VZNav since they released it.  At first it was my primary navigation method and then I upgraded to a Nuvi 350 to transfer back and forth between cars.  It is very nice to have access to a gps tool when you are not in your car and to have a backup when you are in your car in case your Garmin doesn't have the most up-to-date map data.  And Verizon's site to manage your favorites and then sync them wirelessly is a nice feature too. http://vznavigator.vzw.com

Overall, I probably wouldn't suggest paying the $9.99 monthly fee if you have a dedicated navigation unit but I have the premium plan with VZNav included and I am happy that I do because I use it more often than I would have ever thought.  Plus, it also has several other features like traffic delay alerts, movie times and theater location and the ability to send locations from one VZNav phone to another so a friend can just get the address added directly to their phone without typing anything in.

As a GPS device the dedicated units would probably be better for a couple of reasons. First, they use actual GPS (global positioning system) from satellites so they work almost anywhere. I believe the VZ Navigator calculates distances between cell towers and thus requires a signal to work. The displays are also often larger, which is nice. However, the cell phone does have more up to date information and works great if you're in a city or anywhere with a constant signal.

Also, if you don't have a premium plan, go with the dedicated units because they have no monthly fee.

Ya they actually use 3 towers to triangulate your position, which can get messed up if you are not near (5-10 miles) 3 towers lol

They charge you to use their program, and they can since it requires satalites to run. I personally own a pretty nice GPS device and I rarely use it. It seems I get lost most of the time when I am on my motorcycle, and that's when I pay the stupid $3 fee to temporarily use the Vnav. I like it a whole lot bettter than my GPS device because it seems to be more accurate imo. I don't think I would pay the monthly fee simply because I'm too damn stubborn and they do have a temporary fee for when you get lost occasionally.

Also: The Vnav is "Navigating for Idiots" as well which is really flipping nice when you don't need to look at the overview of the road and the surrounding crud. Just LEFT ARROW, RIGHT ARROW and the voice commands are perfect for the Motorcycle.

thanks for the reply. im really looking into having it. im just still wounder if i get this free with my current plan. unlimited data, unlimited messaging, unlimited browser, unlimited vcast video. it says in the "browse & download" page for the app.

"You will be charged $9.99- (FREE with nationwide Premium Plan)"

"And in the info area it says if you dont have an unlimited data plan you will incur application overcharges if you exceed your minutes bundle or megabyte charges for sending/receiving data during use."

sence i have unlimited data, i should not be charged for the use of this app it seems. and for the download price i believe im in a nationwide premium plan. soo should be good to go. im going to call them on this matter. what do you guys think?
thanks.

Sounds like youve got a plan.
my first "GPS" device was VZ nav. I loved it, thought it was the coolest thing.
Then I made the switch to my garmin 60csx and I would never go back.
VZ nav is great for what it is but it cant be compared to a real gps unit. IMO

I hug my garmin more than I hug my girlfriend

Blackmetaldude,

Vnav is an additional feature on any plan. I have the connect plan right now and it still charges me.

National Premium Plan is the way to go if you use most or all of Verizon's premium options. It includes in the price unlimited date, messaging, mobile email, Vcast, and Navigator.

If you have the premium plan you don't get charged for navigator separately.  I think the confusion is when you download it they warn you about the charge but if you have the premium plan you just ignor the message.

FYI all newer cell phones use "real" GPS not just triangulation.

I hope my reply is not too late but vz navigator is terrible ! I mainly use it for local searches which it fails 90% of the time. my local sams club didint have the tires i needed so i checked for nearest stores and it not only missed the one i was standing in front of but missed 2 others, not to mention doesnt now their are post offices closer than 12 miles which there are 3. embarrassing program, the data base they used is outdated by many years.Ive opened three trouble tickets with pages of proof and they admit they have issues but i am giving up and getting an iphone where my friends have instant traffic and delays, and incredible apps. try the local search and see if you have the same issues .not sure where you live but i live in s cal so the data base should be accurate here but isnt. I went to visit family in OK and they want to go to a place called Braums ice cream,we passed two on the way to the nearest one navigator found, how embarssing !! i get navigator free cuz of the premium package and i would never pay for such a crappy program,$120.00 a year when you can by a garmin, not that stupid.

It was either CNET, Engadget, or PhoneArena ... but they just recently did a pretty awesome comparison between Android Maps, Nuvi Phone GPS, Nokia Maps, and VZV Nav.
