With VZW throwing their weight into the Android movement with the Motorola Sholes aka Droid, would you consider leaving behind your enV Touch and acquiring a Droid?

Just curious as to what people were thinking, ideas, comments, internal dialogue, etc.

I would love to get the Droid. Since I'm not due for an upgrade, however, and it will most likely cost more than I have, I'll stick with my enV Touch for now. Maybe I'll get the successor to the Droid, whenever that comes out.

Good point.  I know personally I still have a new-every-two discount available as of tomorrow to use, but I want to wait for three main things:

1) User reviews in-depth, I want to make sure it lives up to the expectation.

2) See how long of a shelf life this device has.  VZW sometimes tends to spring out successors within 1 year of original launches, so I don't want to get stuck with 1st Gen device if it wont be the flagship for long enough.

3) There's rumors of the HD2/HTC LEO, coming to Verizon in CDMA form (obviously).  And while I am deeply in love with QWERTY keyboards, with the right specs that might just be what makes me leave behind my enV touch.

This all said ... I do love my enV Touch and the months-long wait to upgrade from the Voyager to the Touch was well worth it.

I just got my enV Touch in June, so I won't be upgrading until Summer 2011, unless, God forbid, I lose my phone  Shocked (knock on wood).

At that time, I'll consider a smart phone, but I know it'll be painful having to pay a lot more for the mandatory data plan than the simple voice and text plan I currently have.  Embarrassed

I hope everyone is keeping in mind that the newly restructured NE2 deal means that the most your discount will be after your 2 years are up is $50, if you signed up after the restructure date. And that is only if your calling plan is $79.99 or more for the 3 months prior to your next contract renewal.  Now, the 1 year early renewal for "VIP" customers (basically any customer in good standing for at least six months without any late payments or other account delinquencies) also qualifies for a $50 discount.  So if your only reason for waiting out the entire 2 year contract with your current handset is to get the extra $50 you used to get, you no longer have that motivation. You might as well re-up every year as soon as you can afford a new handset that has peaked your interest.  Just a little tidbit for everyone to consider.

Thanks e-T!

ps:  Has anyone heard regarding "Android" specific data plans??  I haven't heard anything to indicate VZW would treat them differently than the rest of their smartphones.

pps:  Right now, the only thing that really appeals to me that I don't have on my enV Touch is the GMAIL/FACEBOOK contact and calendar integration.

Good info., e-T, thanks.  But another reason to not upgrade as fast is to not spend as much $ on new phones and accessories.

For those interested in the Motorola Droid, you may want to check out this review on CNET.  Cool

Oh, I don't expect everyone to start buying a new phone model every year now. I just didn't want people to hang on to their current phone for that second year ONLY because they were waiting on an additional $50 that won't be there when the time comes. I wouldn't buy a new phone every year.  That's why I buy newer phone models each time I re-up my contract, so that I will be happier with its capabilities for a longer period of time.

What are you talking about? Of course there are data plans required when you get a smart phone.  They use tons of data to accomplish most of the cool things that make smartphones worthwhile. Why wouldn't there be a data plan to use these features? Do you want them to provide the data network access for free?

We have the Nationwide Connect Family plan with unlimited text and data so I assume all we'd need would be the Droid phones, right?

No. You would have to add a smartphone data plan to your calling plan. What you have now would not cover the data usage for a Droid phone.
