Droid would be nice, but I'm on a family plan, and I don;t know how to crunch the numbers to avoid paying the extra $20/month.  I have a new iPod Touch and since I work in NYC I'm very often near a hotspot of some kind.  For me having wifi, already downloaded content and apps on my iPod makes having a droid a luxury I can live without.

...which makes me wonder (I'm sure there is a topic on webforum here or somewhere, and if not, there will be) about whether mid-range data plans are approaching extinction.  It seems that carriers are happy to sell good phones at a discount if they can sell us on an expensive data plan, and they need all the cash they can get to pay for their next generation networks.

but wouldn't it be nice to have to only carry around one device instead of two? I love my droid, I have had it a few weeks and still haven't gone through looking at all the free apps there are, eventually I'll make it around to looking at the pay apps lol. Did you see at&t is getting rid of there unlimited data plan for the iphone, they are switching to I beleive it is 10or 14 and a 25 dollar plan, the 25 is for I think it was 5gb of data per month, I'll have to look for the article I read about it.

That's definitely an advantage, and one I bring up whenever anybody asks about getting an iPod Touch.  My response is, even if your phone isn't a smartphone, you can get a lot of out of it that makes the iPod superfluous.  I got mine as a present, so the reverse is the case - now that I have it, it makes the expensive phone superfluous.  This doesn;t factor in the number of people who aren't willing to pay for that capability on any device - even if they don;t have another device to fill the gap.

Aren't they doing it to get their customers to be more conservative about using data because current use is straining their capacity?  AT&T is in this weird circumstance where they need people to buy their services (and products tied to them) but not actually use (or expect to use) those services to capacity.

not really sure but it makes sense. They are going to unlock tethering for the iphone, so your idea about trying to keep people from over using their service makes since, if not for the iphones exclusivity with at&t they would of went bankrupt again.

This is just my two cents...

Although with newer and newer cell phones coming into the market, I still like having my LG enV Touch. It does what i want it to do well: phone calls, txts, sms, and multimedia. Seeing that I have access to WiFi almost everywhere I go, I'm not a fan of any data plan if I'm not going to use it - I barely reach 3mb each month, LoL!

I received a 3rd gen iPod Touch as a gift and must say it is a wonderful device! The App Store is what makes the device a major hit! User Interface is so easy and the experience is wonderful!! BTW, I only go for the free apps, heheee.

Anyways... I recently went on a road trip with my brother and he invested in a MiFi device from VirginMobile, the MiiFi 2200. It's on a prepaid plan with NO CONTRACT and you get the hardware device for $150. There's many plans to choose from. My brother paid $20 for 300mb for 30 days and the coverage was good. It uses the Sprint network and data speeds were close to great! Battery lasts for 4 hours and the signal range is up to 30 feet! We were using it daily and I thought we were consuming a lot of data but after 4 days we only used 75MB! We did email, IM, web surfing, facebook, etc. NO STREAMING VIDEO because i know it consumes major data, although it's possible. What I'm saying is - Check out VirginMobile's MiFi2200 device. It may be a work around the required $30 required monthly if you want WiFi access on the go every now and then :-)

Finally... I'm hearing that Verizon will be introducing tiered data plans upon introducing their 4g network, LTE. Anyone know any details? I'm hoping they start at $10 for 100mb and eliminating the additional $30 a month for data fees on smartphones. That way more of us can get smartphones and hopefully soon... an iPhone! LoL.
