Can't change default phone number in Contacts

HI from a brand-new enV Touch owner (less than 24 hours now). The Verizon store folks  transferred my contacts from my Centro to the Touch last night. I was reading in the manual how I could change the "default" phone number on a contact entry..followed the directions in the manual..and still have the same phone numbers showing up in the default position. Is there a trick to this? Seems like a fairly simple thing to do. I also have questions about the Document Viewer and Pictures..but will post those separately.
