I ask because I was just looks at a few cases.  I noticed that one of the cheap silicone cases covers the internal keyboard and has no letters written on it.  I've had my phone for less then a week...I forgot that maybe someone would just only use the external keyboard...so I had to ask asked the sales person how are you supposed to use the keyboard?  You can't see anything.

His reply was "A lot of people type without looking.  And I asked "On THIS keyboard?  He said yes.

So I just have to ask...Can you type of either of the keyboards without looking at it?  Would you be able to use a silicone case the covers the letters completely?  (I wish I had taken a pic of this thing).

i just tried texting on the internal QWERTY and i did "ok" i got a lot of the words right but often replaced the proper letter for the letter next to it. so, no i don't think i would be able to fully text without looking. on an older phone, such as the RAZR using T9 i could type blind all day but not with a full QWERTY.

just my experiences though  Smiley

I have http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310151606046&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT case, and I was worried about this, but you can see right through the keyboard portion, and the keys light up, and that makes it even easier to see, they also have several other colors

I have the same exact case for my touch only it's white.  I like the case and have it on sometimes and then take it off sometimes just because of the fact that the case covers the keyboard.  Mine does however have letters on it.  When you are in a room and can actually see the glow of the keys through your phone, it's really easy to text.  But when you are outside and can't see the keys glow it becomes pretty difficult to type with the cover on the keyboard.

I never open it up to type, I only use the external keyboard and I always look when I type (because I can't feel)

I think after practice you can text with out looking. I can, but I had the Alias for a year and a half and the qwerty is set up pretty much the same way.

I've used the original enV for 2 years before. 2 years of experience from full keyboard...

At first on the enV Touch I had a little trouble since the layout was a little different from the enV and the shift, sym are shifted down. But after a while I got used to typing again and now I can type without looking. Now I am (again) the enV of my friends since I can type faster and more accurately on our phones Tongue

I was thinking this very same question!  Cool

About the case, I have the Body Glove, which does not cover the keyboard.  That is great.  My brother (who also has an enV Touch) bought a ghetto case from Amazon that fully covered the keyboard.  He wound up cutting up the middle of it to show most of the keyboard - at least all of the letters.  I can attach a pic of his hack job if anyone cares to.

I'm a proficient typer with a regular keyboard, doing some 60 wpm or more if there aren't many special characters and numbers.  But for the life of me, I can't text without looking! Sad This is my first QWERTY phone, so maybe there's a longer learning curve.  I've probably fired off at least a thousand text messages over the past couple months.  I can type relativley quickly with both hands, but I have to look at the keyboard and not the screen.

My biggest problem with typing on the Touch seems to be not getting the space to be where I want it.  For example, I'd type "tot he" instead of "to the".  I'd catch it at the end of the sentece.  If I could type without looking at the keyboard but just looking at the screen, I'd catch it right away.  I hope I can get better with practice.  Embarrassed

I can do it but it looks like this:

go lkdflkdghfoieofh   f;sefj; ;ijf s;ifjsdkfj

That should have said, Hi, how are you today?

LOL, mine would be just as incomprehensible.  OTOH, it'd make for good encrypted communication if the recipient knows to translate by shifting the characters over by one keyboard letter. Cheesy

Most often I find myself opening up the phone to type only for the purpose of typing a word that the phone will not save..

Like most people with the touch that are used to the old layout of the older enV and the Voyager. I upgraded from the Voyager. It did take me about a week to stop pressing [SYM] every time I needed a space and [Shift] every time I need a [SYM]...

I'm better now..
