Hey guys, first thing I should say is I've always had pretty basic flip phones with Nextel (direct connect for my dad's business).  I'm looking at breaking away from that and I'm looking at a few phones, particularly the Touch, Env3, and iPhone.

I'm avoiding the iphone because of the required data plan cost.  I'm not sure what data plan I'd get on the touch or env3.

1. As for the touch and env3, like I said I've only had 2 phones, both basic flips.  I'm looking for QWERTY keyboard for sure, but not so sure about the touch screen.  My brother recently got the env3 and he likes it, and I like the fact it has the physical keypad on the front since sometimes I like to send a quick text, so that front appeals to me.  I've never used a touch screen so I'm not sure how that would be but I'm assuming I'd get used to it.  Is it easy to text on the front of the screen with the virtual keyboards?

2. Another thing is the size.  The touch seems pretty big; I like the smaller size of the env3, but I like the screens of the touch.  Does anyone find the touch to be on the big side?

3. Verizon has a pay as you go of $2/1MB, or plans of $10/25MB and $20/75MB.  I have no idea how much data usage browsing websites uses, does anyone have any experience about how much a typical website uses, such as yahoo or facebook.

4. I hear if you get mobile email, you might as well get a data plan since checking your email uses data, is this correct?  Seems kind of dumb sine you are basically forced to buy a data plan if you want to check your email.  I would think if you have a data plan, you could check your email.

I know I'm asking this in a touch forum Smiley  Thanks for the help.

First things first, the price will be only 79.99 until Noon EST (I'm only guessing on the time zone) because it's part of the current 24-Hr sale.  So if you "want" it and you're just not "sure" I suggest to take a leap of faith since it's an excellent phone.

1) Prior to me having my first touch phone I had two really old school samsung flips and a RAZR.  The transition to the touch screen takes about a week, and then, believe it or not you might find yourself "touch" typing since your thumbs will have the muscle memory.

2) It's big if you compare it to most flips, but keep in mind the Alias 2 or the Boulders tend to carry the same girth.  It's about logistics, if you wear tight clothes, it'll show big time (assuming it fits), if you always have a jacket/coat/etc on you then it goes in that pocket and you're fine.

3) It used to be Unlimited Data for $15.00, the VCAST VPAK.  Now this is still allowed on the LG Voyager and the enV Touch, but I think it's only if you already had it in place on that particular line.  Nevertheless, talk to the VZW Rep, and see if they'll allow you to put the VPAK in the Touch instead of the Capped Limit Data plans.

4) If you plan on using the Mobile IM, Mobile Email, or Browser features of your phone you'll definitely want to pony up for a data plan.  Like I said up above on #3 if you can fenagle your way into the $15 VCAST VPAK, do it.  Otherwise, buy the cheaper plan, and keep track as the month goes by, you can always bump it up mid-billing cycle if you find yourself really into using the data features.

Lastly, take a look around these boards, it's used by a bunch of passionate Touch users with an incredible wealth of knowledge.  Which will help abate any buyer's remorse since there's tons of Tips, Tricks, and How To's that'll let you use every penny of your investment.

I wasn't aware of that sale, did that just end 5 minutes ago or is it over tomorrow at noon?  It's still on the Verizon website, and I see its online only.  The cheapest I've seen the touch for is $100 at amazon with a two-year so this is a pretty good deal considering theres free activation until Monday.

EDIT: Okay sorry about not commenting on your post but I only read it at about 11:50 so I had to do some quick thinking about this deal.  The deal did end at 12 noon today.  I called up Verizon and talked to the girl about it and she said I could still have it for $79.99 + free activation + free overnight shipping if I wanted it, but this was the last chance.  I talked a few things over with her and ran some last things through my head (in particular that I'm probably not going to get an iphone due to the data plan so why keep putting this off thinking that I might get one).  I ended up going with it, and she assured me I have 30 days to be certain its the phone for me.  I went with 450mins/$39.99 + 500texts/$10.00 for now.  She told me the first bill will be about double and the second about 1.5x for whatever reasons.  I should have it by Tuesday with my old number switched to it.

As to the reply to my post, I agree about other phones like the alias 2, that is pretty bulky, especially since it flips.  I asked the rep about the $15 unlimited. plan but she said they don't offer that anymore unfortunately.  As for now I didn't get any data plan or mobile email.

So did you just miss out on the 24 hr sale?  What was the price when you bought it? And did it come yet?  The rep said mine should be here tomorrow (shipping today).

Got it today!  I'm still getting used to the keyboard, I grew fond of the two space keys as opposed to the one single one in the middle.  This was sorta anti-climactic, probably 'cus I psyched myself out; once I get over that I'll be good. haha

Looks like the OP got a new phone.

For others like him, you may want to consider phones like the LG Cosmos or the Samsung Intensity.  Both have sliding qwerty keyboards (I've never warmed to touchscreen 'boards) and don't AFAIK require data plans.  I;d recommend the Intensity over the Kosmos since the Samsung phone has music player and a camera - 1.3Mp to be sure, but for an entry-level phone, that's to be expected.
