I believe if you have insurance for your phone you'll get a refurb'd replacement for $50.
If you don't have insurance I believe you have to pay full price for the replacement, whether it's the Touch or a cheaper phone.  I could be wrong tho.

Why would they replace your used phone with a new phone that you lost? Does that make sense to you? I hope you are responsible enough to pay the $50 insurance fee instead of costing your mother that money.

What if you had a bunch of old Verizon phones in the closet?  What costs would be involved in simply reactivating one of them?

In 2005, with about 6 months til my upgrade, I lost my phone.  I found a 2nd (or 5th) hand V120 and activated that.  For a beatup phone, it was actually pretty good and I had a quick thought about holding onto it but upgraded anyway.

If I wanted to do that now, what would I have to pay?  How much does it cost to change the account to another phone?  Would I be charged an early termination fee for a phone I'd lost?

There would be no additional charge to activate your old phone to replace a lost one. But you would still be required to pay for a data plan if your lost phone had one. Other than that it's pretty straight forward.
