Background:
When i first got the dare, I had the mobile email program (verizon) which allowed me to add my gmail accounts under the "other" option.  A couple weeks ago verizon had to replace my dare, when i re-downloaded the mobile email program, it had Gmail as an option.  Using the "gmail" option looked much better than the generic.

Now that I have the touch, it seems like gmail is no longer an option?

Neoekai was pointing out that the newer Mobile Email app versions on the Dare (and also on the Voyager) have access to Gmail built in to the program, which would make it easier to access that email account than having to set it up as an "other" account.
