This is the 1st phone I've ever seen that doesn't thread text messages. Verizon says it should but I've spoken to LG directly a few minutes ago and they said this phone will not do it. Anybody else have this problem? Anybody figure out how to thead them?

There should be a menu option to display text messages by contact.  I don't have the phone in front of me to go through the menus but the option is definitely there.  I'm sure it has been talked about before so a quick forum search should get you your answers.

Sorting by contact is not the same as threaded. Threaded means that when you open a message you would be able to scroll down and veiw all the previous messages that were part of the conversation. Thus, allowing for better communication. If you send someone 2 messages asking seperate questions which both required a yes or no answer and got one reply of yes, and one reply of no. How do you know which answer goes to which question? You have to send another message to clarify. Again, this is the only phone I've ever seen that does not thread. Even the people at Verizon are confused.

Yes, you are correct.  This is a little annoying and I think VZW/LG embellished the definition of "threaded text messages".  It just sorts by contact.  I figured one would need a smartphone to do real threaded text messages. : \

Well, if there's a hack or app that we can get to make it thread I would be greatly interested. FYI...I bought 4 phones when I got this one, 2 Samsung Rogue's and 1 Chocolate. The other 3 thread messages. I've been to the store and checked the other touch phones and smart phones and they ALL thread. The LG Env touch is the only phone that doeasn't.

I'm very familiar with threaded text messaging.  I'm a BB user.  The only difference I am aware of with the Touch is that it still has a limit on the number of messages, incoming and outgoing, that it can hold so it's hard to hold onto lengthy conversations with multiple contacts for very long.  So after the phone maxes out on the number of outgoing messages it can hold onto, conversations start to fall apart.  I did find a thread that mentions an issue with threading when you respond to older messages instead of new messages HERE.  Other than that, I'm failing to understand your different expectations for threaded vs. sort by contact. It's two names for the same concept.

I think the difference he is talking about is that with some devices, you view the threaded conversation above the type window while you are actually composing the next message, or maybe that you can only view shorter messages completely in "view by contact" mode.

I don't mind view by contact, but I think his idea of threaded messaging is closer to the way things were on my old Treo 700p, with the "chat window" threaded conversation in the top half of the screen and the message being currently typed in the bottom half of the screen, and no required window-changing between viewing texts and typing them.

^ Yes, basically, I imagine real threaded texting as an instant messenger window where you see the whole stream of conversations and can scroll up or down to see the whole history.  With the "sort by contact" texting, you can only see 1 level of history of texting, and that is if you get the text and directly respond to it without exiting that interface.

Funny...the LG ENV TOUCH is the first non-smartphone I've owned that comes close to threading a conversation, it does fall a little short as stated, but its more useful than nothing.

I'm confused. What is the difference between Contact view and Threaded messages.
I thought they were they same.

Threaded means you don't have to open every message to view what was said previously. You would nrmally just scroll through the previuos entries in the conversation INCLUDING what you sent. Very handy if exchanging texts that are more than a few days old to remined yourself of what has been said. Contact view merely sorts by contact. To see what has been said previously you must open the previous message. View by contact does not allow you to see what you sent. You have to go to your sent messages to do that. Threaded works much like email. When you receive a reply you merely have to scroll down to see what they sender has replied too.

The env may be a smart phone but lg certainly isn't!

The enV touch isn't a smart phone, though… If it's that big of a deal to you, VZW will let you exchange your phone if you've had it less than 30 days, and you can get something that fits your needs.

Oh! I understand now. Thanks. The sort by contact is a much needed step up from a regular inbox on all of my other phones.

Yeah, it's a compromise between pure unthreaded and true threaded.  It's probably false advertising for VZW/LG to call it threaded text messaging.
