I realize that it has been discussed and proven impossible to add themes w/o overwriting through bitpim thus far.  However, I read somewhere that once the Touch is a supported device, we would be able to add themes instead of overwriting blue inspiration.  Is this possible now with the updated version of bitpim?

Also, on a side note, why can't we overwrite modern retro?  I hate that theme.  I wish I didn't have to get rid of blue inspiration to add new ones.

We still need to overwrite it, full Bit Pim support doesn't change that.

Its because Blue Inspiration is made in flash (.swf) so it is possible to edit it. I don't think the files for Modern Retro are even in the file system-it was my impression that it was hard coded into the FW and even if someone were to find the files there's no guarantee that it will be a flash file (the same goes for Blue Inspiration on the inside screen).

Evilpooh is correct.

And it seems that the Blue Inspiration theme for the external screen was made using the swf format instead of hard wiring it into the BREW system, like the modern retro theme, because of the type of animation that you experience when you swipe from one icon to the next in each row.  It was probably much easier to create that transition effect using Flash.

Damn... that's a bummer.  Well I know that the most current version of bitpim is only an unofficial test release and not an official release so fingers crossed for being able to add!

What's the likelihood of bricking your phone just from overwriting a theme?  I want to check some other themes on my phone and back up my blue inspiration so I can go back to it, but I've never used bitpim before.  I've read the guide several times and it looks simple, but is it terribly easy to kill your phone?

As long as you follow the simple instructions, you won't ever brick your phone.  The risk comes in when people start messing with files that they don't understand.

And it's not a matter of bitpim supporting the phone officially or not that limits the ability to add new themes vs overwriting the one Blue Inspiration theme.  The reason it won't be possible is that the Touch only looks for it's theme options in specific directory locations.  You could add a new theme file to the phone just fine.  But the phone won't know to look for it because the new location and file names haven't been programmed into the BREW firmware.

Also, if you ever need back ups of the stock files from the phone, you can find them here http://www.env-touch.com/index.php?topic=347.0

xD eT about half way through your phone.
I thought
We'd have to write it into the phones firmware to look for "____" (name of theme) in order to add themes.
Then i read on about it not bein in the brew lol.

Oh okay, so that's why we have to save the new firmware under the same name as blue inspiration?  Because it won't recognize any other name as a valid theme file?  That makes sense... it's dumb that they have limited us like that, but I understand at least.

So do you think that this will be remedied if Verizon updates the device with some new themes (provided they are flash based)?  It's kind of ridiculous that such a nice phone only comes with two themes, one of which is hideous anyway.  You would think that they would at least offer color options for a generic theme called "inspiration."  Just laying different colors over a blank slate for personalization.

You actually don't have to save the new theme files with the same as the stock file's name.  The phone automatically saves your file with that name when you overwrite it.

If Verizon were to include more themes in flash format then it is likely that we'd be able to access and overwrite more slots but based on past experience, I'd say that is an unlikely scenario.  Honestly, I was amazed that they included one theme file that could be altered using bitpim.  As everyone knows, you really only get to change the theme's look on that one menu page.  So it's really more of a partial change since the alterations don't follow through to the rest of the sub menus.

That's true.  I don't understand Verizon though.  They could be so much better and offer so much more freedom to the customer, but they choose not to?  They could even MAKE money by allowing users full access under the condition that if they brick the phone, they have to buy a replacement at their own expense.  That way, they can sell a brand new phone, take your old one, refurb/reflash it, and give it to the next dude with a warranty issue.

But yea, I don't expect Verizon to update this phone for much more than issues related to battery life and minor glitches... they're not really the type to cater to customer's wants.

I always wondered why it was done in flash yet nothing else was

I'm still surprised that they weren't able to figure out a more protected method to create that singularly different menu interface.  It's not very "Verizon" of them.

I don't think the touch uses a verizon UI I'm pretty sure this UI is all LG. I heard someone talking about LG showing this theme (blue inspiration) off at some mobile phone conference.
