Touch screen, what's that craziness all about?!

I will be purchasing the Touch on Friday. Once the phone is activated from the actual VZW store, should it have the latest software installed? I seem to purchase new equipment right after it's released and end up with out of date firmware pretty quickly. My 8700 was replaced after couple of months because it would not take the firmware update from the store. They had it for an hour and I picked it up and my bluetooth still would not stay connected. They grabbed a new (used) one from the back and fired it up and has worked for the past two years flawlessly. I just wonder if I will receive a Touch that was delivered a month ago with out of date software immediately.
I just need some ammunition to take with me so once I am at the store I can have them confirm it's on the latest version.
Thanks everybody.

As of right now, the latest firmware is V04. If the techs at the store where you buy the phone are on the ball, they will have gone through their stock to update the software on each phone based on the free time they have. More than likely though, the phone will only have the software that the phone originally shipped with from Verizon's warehouses.

My guess is VX11KV03. That's a official release. But I guess some people claim to have gotten V04. I don't know if it's rumor or not, but I've notice even numbers are beta's and odd numbers are official releases.

And would these savvy technicians simply dial in *228 or do they need to connect it up to the "special machine" that flashes it? That's what they did to my 8700 a couple years back. I guess I don't care, as long as they update it.
I'm going to call in to have the gal unbox it and get it charging for me before I arrive. So when I get there, we should be able to activate it and go from there. In addition to the charging and such, I'll have her check the software version against what should be the latest. She is on the ball and knows her stuff, if I ask here to look into it, she'll probably know what I am talking about.

HOLD ON... did someone say 'customer service'? From VERIZON? I have asked repeatedly for a clear concise printed or printable explanation of VZ's warranty policies. I had a company BB which due to cost cutting employees were offered two choices- we could retain the phone with our number by adding to or starting a personal account, or subsidize the cost with a payroll deduction. Catch was, if you were laid off or terminated, a subsidized phone could NOT be transferred later. So I transferred the BB to my account. Three months later it refused to stay turned on, nothing would seem to fix it. At this point the phone was seven months old- and Verizon refused to honor the one year warranty! Reason? Because the phone was now on a different account- never mind the number nor owner changed. They DID give me a refurbished replacement....with a 90 day warranty. And so far despite calls and emails, I still do not have that explanation in full. For me VZ is nessesary, as I am moving to South Dakota....where it is either Alltel (now owned by VZ) or Verizon, there are no other carriers. Remember when VZ announced their network would be 'open'? LOL.....

Thanks for the version numbers guys. The fist thing I asked when I went in to pick up the Touch was to check the version. She said they had recently received a shipment so it was likely to be the latest. haha Yeah right. Box #2 was my lucky choice....So I do have the latest now after two attempts.
Fortunately she was receptive to looking around and finding me the device I actually know I wanted/needed with the latest software right out of the box. None of the ...let me just add it here routine.

If the even number = beta / odd number = official release theory is true then Verizon shipped the env touch with beta software on it? My phone came with version V02!

I don't think the beta thing holds true for the ota updates, it seems that they just go in sequence now, so the next update they release should be v05
