I am wondering if upgrading my firmware over the air will cost me anything or is it free.

Do you have a data package on your calling plan?  Or are you still paying by the MB?

A data package is a feature add-on that allows you to pay a flat, monthly fee for access to the internet and other services on your phone that require connecting to Verizon's network (other than phone calls and basic sms text messages) so you don't end up paying $1.99 per MB sent and received by your phone.  As far as I know, any data sent to your phone, even a firmware update, will cost you data charges at $1.99 per MB, even a firmware update.
