phone shuts down continously, except when in airplane mode

Today my touch started continuously shutting down and restarting itself.  I tried to take out the battery to no success.  Through more investigation I realized the phone would shut off when it got a certain type of connection to the Verizon network.  Like if I check my voicemail, as soon as I put in the passcode it will shut down.  On any other call it will shut off shortly after I begin the call.  If I just turn it on eventually it will shut down after about 10 seconds even if I do nothing. 

I did find out that if I can turn the phone on, and get to airplane mode before the phone shuts off, it won't happen.  I can still send text messages but composing them in airplane mode, then sending them, turning airplane mode off, then the phone says message sent and shuts down.  My friends received them, my I never get delivery confirmation from my Verizon friends, and I have not received any text messages, even though my friends have told me have replied to mine. 

I know I probably need to talk to Verizon about this, however; I will not have time to go to a Verizon store until Thursday, so I was hoping maybe there's an easy solution I can do myself.
