Some things that come to mind:

- Are you using an env-touch compatible version of bit pim?

- Do you have the latest env-touch drivers installed on your computer?

- Make sure you're not on "music mode" or "usb mass storage mode" when connected to the cable.

I see your using 1.0.7, but there is a new version that came out 5 days ago.  The one you have will work so don't feel you have to get the new one.  As for transferring contacts, the only way that I know how to do that is by the backup function of the filesystem.  In essence you would be overwriting that file. 

Edit:Another way to transfer is using the bluetooth function.  It's quick and easy.  Just go to tools, bluetooth, select your computer, then select send name card or get name card.  You can select multiple cards at a time.  I think it's easier than plugging in the cable and starting BitPim.
