Hey everyone, sorry if this topic has been posted before but I looked and couldn't find any definitive answers for the problem.

I'm trying to take the text messages on my enV touch and put them on my computer. All I really want is to save the texts that are on my phone while still clearing up space for new ones and I figured putting them on the computer would be the easiest way.

All I've been able to find is to use bitpim but then there's talk of it not working for the enV and then I can get a beta version but it may not work and I really don't know what to do.

So all I'm asking is can I take the text messages on my enV Touch and save them on some other device such that my inbox can be emptied so I can get new texts?

Thanks alot for any responses! Smiley

There's no set functionality like "backing up" your phonebook that'll allow you to back up your texts.  Go check out:  http://www.env-touch.com/general-env-touch-discussion/is-it-possible-reproduce-text-messages-on-pc

There's some alternatives there for you to consider.  Ultimately, you can just e-mail yourself the text if you're really in a jam to save stuff.

I'm surprised there's not an easy way to transfer text messages from a phone to a computer (and then to another phone) using BitPim.  It's too bad VZW didn't have their manufacturers create a "my_text" folder in the microSD(HC) card that would store all text messages.  Then it would be so easy to move texts and not have some arbitrary and ridiculously small limit of ~250 messages.  Roll Eyes

There's some software packages that do that for you automatically, sad thing is that they're not cheap at all.  Even sadder is that the 160 character limitation has no basis in the current capabilities of the technology and is just an arbitrary number that hasn't shifted in years.

I believe there has been some discussion that the 160 character limit has been lifted on normal phones like the Touch.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

Indeed the "limitation" has been lifted, but for billing purposes, the TelCo's are still charging for 1 SMS per 160 CHARACTERS.  So it's really "still" there ... you just now can send multiple SMS's in sucession as 1 message.

Are there a lot of you out there still not on an unlimited texting plan?  That aspect of the 160 character issue has never been something I was concerned with because I added the unlimited texting as soon as it was available.

That's an excellent market research question.  Congress is currently looking at SMS charges as one of the areas where TelCo deregulation (or lack-thereof really) has allowed them to seriously overcharge.

With the advent of VZW's "Connect" plan, I would venture there's A LOT less folk on "limited" texting plans, however, for plans such as "Family" plans where the parents don't really text, more than likely the "Kids" are stuck adding texting packages and probably saddled with non-unlimited ones.

Oh, so one would need to buy a software package to transfer texts like that.  So those who get their phones replaced under warranty where the phone still has data (such as a cracked screen, where the data is not harmed) would not be able to transfer over all the text messages easily, other than e-mailing them 1 at a time (and then re-e-mailing them to the new phone when that's active)?  What a PITA. Sad  I would've thought that BitPim could make this relatively painless.

Unlimited text plan or not, the limitation occurs when sending long texts (i.e., more than 160 characters) to those on other networks.  I know VZW lifted that restriction recently, but my out-of-network recipients are still only getting the 1st 160 characters of my long texts.  Of course, I never had problems of sending long texts to other VZW customers.

That shouldn't be the case.  VZW to Non-VZW (Non-Smartphones) should receive multiple text messages capped at 160 characters when you go over the 160 when sending it to them.  The monkey wrench being smartphones.  lol

That should be the case but it isn't.  My recipients have only gotten 1 text that is cut off.  So far, I tried with T-Mobile and Google Voice text recipients.

I'm not surprised about Google Voice since it's VoIP based ... but T-Mobile, hmm, unless once again, it's the whole smartphone debacle ... is it s T-Mobile Smartphone?

Yes, good point, the T-Mobile recipient has a Google G1 smartphone.  So much for the smartphone being better than a dumb phone, I suppose, LOL.
